In March 2026, AIMI lab member Moritz Schillinger traveled to Ljubljana, Slovenia, for the 21st annual meeting of the European Society for Molecular Imaging. The event represents one of the most important meetings for the photoacoustic research community in Europe, highlighting the latest developments in the field.
We contributed to the scientific program with a study investigating the accuracy of photoacoustic measurements in clinical settings:
Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue as a Confounding Factor in Quantitative Photoacoustic Imaging
The study highlights how subcutaneous fat thickness introduces a context-dependent bias in signal quantification: it can simultaneously decrease signal via depth-related attenuation and increase it through lipid-driven spectral-coloring. It emphasizes the need to correct for tissue composition to improve reliability in quantitative PAI and other optical imaging modalities.
Beyond this, our team contributed to several collaborative projects alongside our clinical partners at the Department of Paediatrics and the Department of Vascular Surgery (University Hospital Erlangen).
